From around 2015 until 2019 I used to be a pretty serious vinyl collector, I think I had around 800+ by the end? But collecting "seriously" and having so many really sucked the fun out of my hobby and I missed the days before I knew what a matrix number was and would be happy with anything I unearthed in the antiques stores. So in 2019 I sold my whole collection and it paid for a trip to New York to see 4 shows on Broadway!
I found myself missing physical media though, and in 2022 I started my collection again from scratch. This time I made the rule that I'd be a lot more selective about what I bought on vinyl and my main music collection would be my CDs. I'm not anti digital music (I've had my iPod since 2008 and will die with it in my hand!) but I am skeptical of streaming and never really owning anything which leaves companies free to edit previously released tracks and restrict what you can and can't listen to on any whim. This music is mine and no one can take it away from me. I also love album artwork and just holding things that mean the most to me in my hands. I like vinyl a lot, but it takes up a lot of space, requires a lot of maintenance, and is pretty expensive nowadays so I've really learnt to appreciate CDs (and maybe even prefer them at this point honestly, they may not be as 'romantic' as vinyl but they have their own charm). I also like that a lot of my collection has memories attached to buying it, all the way from the CDs I bought at Tower Records in Tokyo, to browsing vinyl at the local record fair and the people I met there. Music connects us in so many ways.
I keep this list entirely for my own benefit, it gives me somewhere to check back to when I'm in a store and can't remember if I already own it. But you're more than welcome to have a nose at what I'm listening to and collecting, I keep this list updated regularly.
